How to Turn Boring Gifts into Gorgeous Personalized Gifts for Pennies

-by Desne Doman

Had this great idea to spruce up the usual box of chocolates or wine...

Buy the usual chocolates, wine or gourmet coffee and then have some free samples sent to you which you think that person would enjoy. Pop into a little basket, wrap with tissue paper and cellophane from your local $2 shop and tra-la!

So feeling inspired, I thought I would quickly list all the freebies you could get online to make it easy for you. No such luck! In Australia, online freebies are few and far between and take about 4 weeks to reach you. This is because everyone is applying for them online and the manufacturers cannot keep up. Eventually they remove their free offers because there are too many online freebie hunters that have no intention of buying.

However, here are a handful I have found online as well as alternatives…

  • Box of chocolates with some lovely skin cream samples:-

Natural Formula Trial Products (a collection of freebies)

  • Box of chocolates with relaxing bath salts. Make the bath salts. Its easy, cheap and will be appreciated far more:-

500g Epsom salts, 10 drops lavender oil, 2 teaspoons bicarbonate of soda (softens skin). Mix together and put in 1 fancy stoppered bottle from local charity shop ($1 at St Vincent De Pauls’)

Not a bath fanatic? - Make them a luxurious antibacterial moisturiser: - 3/4 sorbolene cream to1/4 cold pressed oil (almond or avocado is great – at a push a good olive oil will do). Add a couple of drops of lavender essential oil and bottle.

Now for the personal touch: - Handwrite a tag that says something like “Sue’s Sensuous Salts” (use something similar for the moisturiser). Instructions: Send husband out with kids, Dissolve generous handful of salts in a warm bath; Melt slowly in bath; Dissolve chocolates in mouth – do not emerge for 1 hour.

  • Wine or bag of freshly ground gourmet coffee with one of these:-

or for the handy man http://www.floodaustralia.net/freesample.htm

or if you want to be a bit naughty : Get him a Victoria’s Secret Catalogue at http://www2.victoriassecret.com/html/custsrvc/request/index.cfm This is an above board US lingerie shop that has legendary status and their catalogues are heavily subscribed to by men.

or make some exquisitely rich cookies or sweets.

  • An alternative to the wine or coffee is to fill a plain bowl or cheese plate (cheap at a $2.00 shop or from a charity shop) with Brownies

Again, wrap and personalise it with a handwritten note. For example “Greg’s Gourmet Gorge” - Instructions: - Send wife and kids to bed; slowly sip wine whilst relishing wicked brownies. Roll to bed.

  • Baby Gift Basket: - Buy some Bonds jumpsuits and contact the manufacturers/distributors that offer free samples products. In “Enriched Baby Secrets” (http://www.enrichedyou.com.au/ ) I list 20 manufacturers/distributors that will send you freebies (most come within a week or two) and I also tell you how to find more (applies to non baby products as well). Pack in a basket ($1 from charity recycled shop) with some tissue paper and cellophane

In Summary, two keys to turn boring gifts into gorgeous gifts

  1. Personalise it, we all like to be made to feel special.
  2. Present it well – wrap it attractively – some ribbon adds that extra touch.
