Which of Your Bargains Will Be Blunders This Year?

-by Desne Doman

Don't you just love a bargain? Hmmmm... the satisfaction you get when you have paid way less than its advertised price. Sometimes, just sometimes, your bargain is a blunder.

A bargain is not a bargain...

  • unless you actually need it or can sell it for a profit (and you do)

  • when you spend more money in the long run - like that cheap shirt that constantly needs dry-cleaning.

  • when quality counts - like that undrinkable bargain wine Uncle Bob keeps on giving you each Christmas

  • when it has hidden evil like that cheap software - which comes with some hidden spy wear.

  • if you bought it in the heat of the auction moment. - only to find out you can buy anywhere, at a cheaper price.

  • unless you can use it - like that cheap bulk cereal that your kids refuse to eat.

  • unless you claim the discount by sending off to get the rebate - manufacturers count on 95% of buyers not doing this.

  • when you bulk buy so much of it that eventually its shelf life expires - like the five cartons of UHT milk in the back of your pantry

  • just because the shop says its half price - Half of what? - a 200% mark-up?

  • when there are strings attached - like that free phone (valued as $650!), with the most extortionate fees that tie you in for two years.

3 Surefire Ways to Ensure Your Bargain Is a Bonanza!

1. Do your research and know what the going rate is locally. Here is a quick way to get a good sample of prices online.

a. Go to http://www.froogle.google.com (Froogle is a Google sidekick that tracks down catalogue offerings and new items).

b. Type acme widget site:au The site:au will limit the search to sites in a specific country (in this
case Australia) Check catalogue prices.

c. Click on Web (top of search results page) to do the same search on Google. You should now have a good range of online retailers and prices.

d. Click on Groups to see what people may be saying about the product.

2. Ensure that it has a real value to you. Do the simple Rule of Three test - What three uses does this bargain have? If you can find three it's definitely a bargain!

3. Negotiate your bargain, but before closing ensure there are no hidden surprises.

Finally, remember "a bargain is a bargain in the eye of the beholder" and when Uncle Bob proudly boasts about that bargain red he got -ssSh... and smile -some things may not be a bargain but well worth their price!.
